What Do We Look For In Emerging Artists?

Back on November 24, 2015, I had the honor of being interviewed by one of my favorite new music discovery platforms, fanum.fm. When asked the question, “What characteristics or qualities do I find attractive in new and emerging artists?” I answered as follows:

When I was an A&R and music publisher, I was often asked: “What do I look for in emerging artists?” As strange as it may sound, this was never a simple question for me. In fact, I was always looking for better ways to explain what catches my attention. Even today, when it comes to discovering new and emerging talent, there are a few elements that I find myself…well…a “sucker for” — here they are!

1. Production Quality (Songs)

My introduction into the world of recorded music came through producing and writing songs alongside a very good friend of mine. We were HUGE fans of The Neptunes and were always intrigued by the quality of their production and how they worked with a wide variety of artists. When it comes to identifying artists who catch my attention, I’m very production driven.

Here are a few attributes which I tend to look for:

  • Good selection of sounds (electronic, live, sampled, etc).
  • Catchy melodies and chord progressions.
  • Clear and audible vocals.
  • Interesting vocal and/or instrumental arrangements.
  • Thoughtful lyrics and storytelling.

In October of 2015, I was talking to one of my friends in the lobby of my apartment building. A few minutes into our conversation, I heard an ear-catching melody underneath some foreign female vocals. I immediately had to pause the conversation to find out exactly what song was being played. Thanks to Shazam, I discovered it was “Come” by Jain – a singer/songwriter from France. Due to the flavor and quality of her production, I was positively exposed to her music. As a result, I continue to follow her work as she proceeds to build her brand.

2. Brand Potential (Cohesive Aesthetic)

I firmly believe that a strong brand should entail a cohesive aesthetic across all media platforms. It’s important to avoid confusing our potential consumers and make sure that they know where and how to find us. Our website, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Soundcloud, Twitter, and Youtube all serve as primary and secondary touch-points for people to find us. They need to be in sync. A GREAT example of an emerging artist with a cohesive aesthetic is Kali Uchis:

I’ve always been a sucker for the small things that tend to add up as our careers manifest down the line. Do you notice how Kali’s quality visuals match her personality, style, and theme across all channels? Even her color scheme is a consistent baby blue and pink. Brand cohesion plays a huge role when it comes to catching and keeping our consumers attention.

3. Diligence, Honesty, and Initiative

Practicing diligence, taking initiative, and being honest with one’s self is truly what helps to set an artist up for the long-haul in regards to defining their legacy. I believe Kehlani is a prime example of this. Her current label, Atlantic Records, considers her a “mindie” act (‘Major’ artist with ‘Indie’ bonafides), having her fan base as an independent artist before garnering the attention of the majors.

It’s apparent that her hard work is just beginning to pay off, while her more subtle honesty bleeds through her music. In an interview with The Fader, she talks about going through foster care, losing her father as a child, and her wavering sexual identity. These are all topics that many artists shy away from for fear of compromising how they are viewed in public. Kehlani is different. She realizes that to inspire others is to accept herself for exactly who she is. She is such a shining light of truthful experience and authentic artistry! For this reason, Kehlani is continuing to win over fans and supporters even through her public challenges and setbacks. Keep striving Kehlani, keep striving!

W Hotels + Billboard Present: Next Up

On Tuesday April 26, 2016, we received the April 30, 2016 issue of Billboard magazine. To our surprise, we stumbled upon W Hotels and Billboard magazine announcing the launch of “Next Up,” an emerging artist showcase series featuring new artists and new music. When we first saw this event advertised in Billboard magazine, we only knew that it was going to consist of 4 artists performing in 4 different cities at 4 different W Hotels.

Upon looking further into the event, we found out that the first official Next Up concert will be held at the W Hollywood in Los Angeles, CA on May 25, 2016. This launch will then be followed by events in Seattle, WA and Minneapolis, MN. The last stop is expected to be at the W South Beach in Miami, FL sometime in October of this year.

In September of 2014, W South Beach Hotel & Residences, in partnership with Vision Compere’s creative house, VISION, extended their W SpeakerBox concert series music program. It was also a live music program featuring intimate performances by celebrated and emerging artists from a variety of international genres.

We personally worked very closely with Vision Compere’s creative house. Our particular focus was to curate and identify emerging artists from various cities throughout W Hotel properties in Chicago, IL; Miami, FL; and San Francisco, CA.

  • On October 2, 2014, Daryn Alexus was featured as an artist who was #NextUp and performed at W Hotels City Center property located in Chicago, IL.

  • On October 30, 2014, Kyle Dion was featured as an artist who was #NextUp and performed at W Hotels South Beach property located in Miami, FL.

  • On April 30, 2015, Lara Johnston was featured as an artist who was #NextUp and performed at W Hotels San Francisco property located in San Francisco, CA.

Overall, we love the fact that W Hotels and Billboard are teaming up to provide a platform for emerging artists to shine! This is exactly why we teamed up with VISION for their W SpeakerBox concert series 2 years ago.

We’re glad to see that Billboard expanded on a similar model of music programming with W Hotels. Lets continue pushing culture forward and allowing artists the opportunity to showcase their talents!

Louis Mattrs: Superman

I’m always a sucker for good music! As of yesterday, I think that I may have found my new favorite song for the next few months. The track is entitled, “Superman” and it’s from an artist by the name of Louis Mattrs who’s from Brighton, UK. His Slow Waves EP dropped a little under 2 months ago on November 27, 2015 and Superman is definitely my favorite cut!

Where is Chantel McCrary?

A week or so ago I was putting together a playlist for my homegirl’s 80s -vs- 90s party taking place this Saturday. I happened to come across Zhané(s) classic, “Sending My Love” and I definitely had to add it to my playlist. I knew that I heard a rendition of this song somewhere else before. I just couldn’t put a finger on it.

For the last week, I had this tune playing in my head. I was trying to figure out, “Where else have I heard this song before?” I knew that I heard it on soundcloud a few years ago. I also knew that it was re-worked by a young female vocalist. As I sat down at my computer a few minutes ago, I starting to recall a list of names from my memory. I started by looking at my spreadsheet of emerging female vocalists that I’ve compiled over the last 3 years. Nothing. As I started to tune into my intuition, I began to search for names within the parameters of what I felt was close to my target: Chanel, Shanel, Shantel. I finally went to YouTube and typed in the song title, “Sending My Love” and added a “Ch”. Wha-laa…there it was…Chantel, “Sending My Love.” It’s been 3 years since I saw the video and it’s still pretty dope and very well shot!

After some additional research (perusing through the comments), I see that her full name is Chantel McCrary. Considering that I haven’t heard any new music from her in a while, I wonder what she’s currently up to? She’s definitely talented and I would love to know what she’s working on. I guess we’ll find out soon!

VEVO DSCVR Presents: Alessia Cara

Here at A Lovers Ambition Lifestyle Group, we’re all about supporting emerging artists while providing them with a platform for their music to be discovered. VEVO DSCVR is a music incubator just for this. Alessia Cara’s “Four Pink Walls” EP (8/28)

I initially came across Alessia Cara about a month ago when I heard her debut single, “Here” on Beats 1 Radio. As soon as I heard the record, I instantly tagged it to add to my personal playlist. Other than the Isaac Hayes “Ikes Rap II” sample which was also used by Portishead and stems from the Wallace Collection’s “Daydream”, there was something about this record that reminded me of something that I heard in the past. At the moment, I just couldn’t put a finger on it. Now I know. “Here” reminds me of a record that was released about 6 years ago by an artist named Portia Monique entitled “Get To Know You.” It has a similar soulful feel and vibe to it which I love!

When I found out that Alessia Cara was signed to Def Jam, I reached out to a friend of mine who told me that they were very excited to have her as an addition to their roster. I myself am eager to hear more. On August 28, Alessia will be releasing her debut EP, “Four Pink Walls.”
