W Hotels + Billboard Present: Next Up

On Tuesday April 26, 2016, we received the April 30, 2016 issue of Billboard magazine. To our surprise, we stumbled upon W Hotels and Billboard magazine announcing the launch of “Next Up,” an emerging artist showcase series featuring new artists and new music. When we first saw this event advertised in Billboard magazine, we only knew that it was going to consist of 4 artists performing in 4 different cities at 4 different W Hotels.

Upon looking further into the event, we found out that the first official Next Up concert will be held at the W Hollywood in Los Angeles, CA on May 25, 2016. This launch will then be followed by events in Seattle, WA and Minneapolis, MN. The last stop is expected to be at the W South Beach in Miami, FL sometime in October of this year.

In September of 2014, W South Beach Hotel & Residences, in partnership with Vision Compere’s creative house, VISION, extended their W SpeakerBox concert series music program. It was also a live music program featuring intimate performances by celebrated and emerging artists from a variety of international genres.

We personally worked very closely with Vision Compere’s creative house. Our particular focus was to curate and identify emerging artists from various cities throughout W Hotel properties in Chicago, IL; Miami, FL; and San Francisco, CA.

  • On October 2, 2014, Daryn Alexus was featured as an artist who was #NextUp and performed at W Hotels City Center property located in Chicago, IL.

  • On October 30, 2014, Kyle Dion was featured as an artist who was #NextUp and performed at W Hotels South Beach property located in Miami, FL.

  • On April 30, 2015, Lara Johnston was featured as an artist who was #NextUp and performed at W Hotels San Francisco property located in San Francisco, CA.

Overall, we love the fact that W Hotels and Billboard are teaming up to provide a platform for emerging artists to shine! This is exactly why we teamed up with VISION for their W SpeakerBox concert series 2 years ago.

We’re glad to see that Billboard expanded on a similar model of music programming with W Hotels. Lets continue pushing culture forward and allowing artists the opportunity to showcase their talents!

Music x Movement: Maluca Mala

As I was checking out Maluca’s music video for her latest release, “Mala,” a thought came across my mind that this particular track may be a good song for a Zumba class. Granted, I’ve never personally taken a Zumba class. However, I would definitely be curious to see what dance routines can be created to this one.

According to an article I read about a month ago in the Wall Street Journal, Zumba classes attract 15 million people each week. Talk about a huge reach! In addition, music promotion is one of the methods used to draw people to Zumba. Hence, this is certainly an audience of devoted members who are exposed to new music on a weekly basis.

Now imagine this, when Zumba members actually really enjoy the music they hear, what will most likely happen next? Yes, correct…more listens, more streams, more downloads, and maybe even more tickets being sold at Maluca’s next show. Ahhh…such a beautiful relationship!

So, will we be hearing the sounds of Maluca playing in Zumba classes anytime soon? We’ll have to get in touch with Zumba’s music director, Sergio Minski. Until then, we’ll have to wait and see! #MusicxMovement

This year marks the 20th Anniversary of The Fugees classic album, “The Score” and our beloved homegirl, Ms. Amira Fair who is the host of “The Spill” on Non-fiction Radio recently had the pleasure of interviewing the legendary Grammy Award winning music producer, Jerry Wonda. They sat down and made time to discuss his musical inspirations (KRS-One, Dr. Dre, and Quincy Jones), his love for being a chef of music, and how it feels to win 3 Grammys. His impression of his cousin Wyclef is pretty on point also!

I’m always a sucker for good music! As of yesterday, I think that I may have found my new favorite song for the next few months. The track is entitled, “Superman” and it’s from an artist by the name of Louis Mattrs who’s from Brighton, UK. His Slow Waves EP dropped a little under 2 months ago on November 27, 2015 and Superman is definitely my favorite cut!

As I was organizing my desk and sorting through some papers I came across an old note with an asterisk that read, *All In – Mr. Carmack & Kehlani. I remember writing this down this past summer after hearing the song on a Soulection mix via Beats 1 radio. I decided to revisit the song today and I happened to come across this #SongsFromScratch video presented by Adidas Originals and Yours Truly Creative.

Puff Daddy – MMM Documentary

Puff has always been a polarizing figure for better or worse. Regardless of what we may or may not know, one thing remains apparent – his ambition, passion, and strive toward greatness is second to none!

Here’s a pretty inspiring behind the scenes documentary for his most recent project released earlier this month, “MMM.” A few tracks that caught my attention were, “WORK!N” (9:45) and “AUCT!ON” (11:40). I’ll be checking out the project in it’s entirety tomorrow morning. For now, enjoy the video!

When I first listened to Tori Kelly’s, Unbreakable Smile album on Spotify last month “Talk” was definitely the standout record that caught my attention. To be very specific, I fell in complete love with the bridge at 2:10 and 3:10…OMG…the instrumentation is so lush and beautiful! I must have played this song back to back to back about 20 times. We hope you do too! Shout out to Malay (@MalayHo) on the production.
