We All Matter – What Will We Decide?

Earlier this morning, I read a few pages of Tony Dungy’s, “The Mentor Leader.” On page 107, I came across a story that he shared in regards to his days as a student in junior high school. Mr. Rockquemore, Tony Dungy’s Assistant Principal at Frost Junior High School once asked Tony, “Why would you let anything stop you from doing what you have the ability to do?” It was this question along with Mr. Rockquemore’s willingness to get involved with Tony’s academic and athletic development that changed the entire course of Tony’s life.

The lesson that  I learned from this story is not to underestimate the platforms we have to impact and touch the lives of one another. Unless we tell someone or we are told by someone, we will never know the impact that one phrase, sentence, word, or experience might have on us or someone else. I have often heard the phrase, “Don’t forget the “small” people at the bottom when you make it to the top.” In my opinion, there are no small people. We all matter tremendously. The fact that we were all born as human-beings is a miracle in itself. Out of the five kingdoms of living organisms, we are just one species. Let’s not even touch on the various groups of kingdoms. We’ll save that for science class!

Nonetheless, it’s important that we are humble and grateful for the lives that we live. Regardless of who we are or where we are from, there will always arise an opportunity which will allow us to make an impact on another person’s life. This will either be for better or for worse. It is up to us to make the right decision. Now the question is, “What will we decide?”

3 Ways We Can Be Just Like Gary Vee!

In February of 2016, LinkedIn hosted it’s local edition of the LinkedIn Speaker Series in NYC. The purpose of LinkedIn’s local edition is to extend it’s global speaker series program through highlighting local rockstars who inspire and inform people to spark conversations and start connections. These conversations are often the result of many of the amazing ideas that are new, next, and noteworthy across various industries and fields.

In this edition of LinkedIn’s Local Speaker Series, one of our favorite guys and LinkedIn influencer, Gary Vaynerchuk chats with LinkedIn’s Senior News Editor, Chip Cutter. Throughout this discussion, Gary offers his advice, insight, and input as unapologetically as always about everything and to everyone within his reach. This even includes telling LinkedIn how their business can be better if their Snapchat account had it’s own version of “The Office” as an effort to make their brand feel more human. “I have very good intuition on what everybody is going to do a lot of times before they even realize they are going to do it” says Gary.

With so much more to offer, please read along for the “3 Ways We Can Be Just Like Gary Vee!”

1. Pay Attention:

One of the reasons why Gary has a very good intuition on what everyone is going to do a lot of times before they even realize they are going to do it is because he pays very close attention to his environment. “Everyone can do what I do.” says Gary. “I wake-up in the morning, grab my phone, look at the App Store’s “100 Top Free Apps”, and look at the charts. That’s real data. I’m not predicting the success of certain companies. This to me is very basic. Don’t be a headline reader. Really read and listen.

2. Train Towards Opportunity:

“I look at history to repeat itself quite a bit” says Gary, “I think pattern recognition is extremely important in what we are living through now because the internet itself is really changing the game and we’re still only 20 years into it.” We have to condition ourselves and train for our future. It’s as if we’re preparing for a marathon. Our life’s destiny is always on the line. We must develop the cadence and context to prepare ourselves for openings and opportunities when they present themselves. “When we know what we want for our lives and we make that shift at all costs, we win” says Gary, “Playing a game that doesn’t map what we actually want it to be is a really big mistake.”

3. Reverse Engineer Everything:

“I sell a ton of stuff by following the people who I want to sell to on social networks, figuring out what they like in the world, and using that information as a way to sell them” says Gary. It’s all about learning from your lead and selling what they need. Gary also mentions that we must eliminate romance. “It’s important to understand what they care about more than what you care about” says Gary, “Build a business that allows you to scale your capabilities and passions. Be a practitioner and engage yourself in what you do. Recognize Patterns. There will be a lot of money to be made if we can buy the companies that we know the big companies in the world are going to have to buy to be successful” says Gary.

What Is Our Competitive Advantage?

“The sooner we figure out what our competitive advantage is, the more likely we are to be able to compete” says Tai Lopez. It seems quite simple, doesn’t it? Well…lets get started!

The first question that we may want to begin asking ourselves is, “What is our career destiny?” It’s important that we know ourselves and know where we need to go in an effort to showcase our competencies, skills, and talents. However, before we do this, we must conduct a pretty intense evaluation when it comes to running our own self-assessment. In reference to Friedrich Nietzsche, “As extraordinary individuals, we should all seek to rise above the crowd.”

Eulerian Destiny

Tai talks a lot about identifying what he calls our “Eulerian Destiny.” Our Eulerian Destiny gives us hints as to what our competitive advantages are as well as our potential career destiny. The Eulerian Destiny chart consists of 5 circles, each of which asks one of the following questions:

1. Who and what did we grow up around?

2. What did we want to be when we were 14 years old?

3. What have we been doing for the past 10 years?

4. What do strangers, or even people who don’t like us compliment us on?

5. What can we talk at length about with our friends?

As I mentioned in a previous post of mine, When I was a child, I was infatuated with architecture and construction. My siblings and I grew up in a working class family in the New Brighton section of Staten Island, NY. I was always amazed at how structures were built and developed. More than anything else, I loved playing with legos. The idea of connecting tiny little pieces of plastic together in an effort to form a finished product is what enamored me the most. As I had grown older, I eventually gravitated over to drawing, playing sports, and creating music.

When I was 16 years old, I made the decision to quit playing football. Deep down inside, I knew that continuing to play football was not going to be a suitable career path for me to follow. One thing that I have always possessed was a strong sense of following my intuition. I would find myself repeating this same scenario again when I attended Middlesex County College as a Freshman in 2005. This time, I decided that it was not in my best interest to continue pursuing a degree in Construction Engineering. Although it was something that as I child I believed I wanted to do when I got older, my interests at the time gravitated elsewhere. From here, I would continue on a path that would lead me to obtaining my Associate in Fine Arts Music degree from Middlesex County College. A few years later, I obtained my Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication from Rutgers University.

Today, my creative outlet is essentially a combination of all of my childhood endeavors. I may no longer build blocks, connect legos, create music, and play sports. However, I do build brands, connect people, identify talent, and create opportunities. Ultimately, I’m in the business of helping others to identify with the sense of their own “Lovers Ambition” in regards to achieving something of significance and value in their lives.

7 Leadership Principles: Michael Hyatt

This morning I was listening to the latest episode of Michael Hyatt and Michele Cushatt’s, “This Is Your Life” podcast. As I was listening, they drilled down on a handful of leadership principles and theories that I began to fall highly in favor of. Here are a few points worth highlighting:

1. Seek Significance:

If we have a dream that is significant, it takes a team. If our dream doesn’t require a team, then we’re not thinking or dreaming big enough.

2. Trade Safety For Extraordinary:

Playing it safe never translates to extraordinary leadership. Risk on the other hand gives us great opportunity for extraordinary leadership if we know how to make the most of our opportunities.

3. Be Whole Apart From Our Role:

Our position is a role, not an identity. When we look for a position to complete us or to give us an identity or significance, we are already setting ourselves up to be unsatisfied. It’s important for us to know that we are whole apart from our “role.”

4. Practice Self-Leadership:

Self-leadership precedes team leadership. We don’t have the right or the ability to lead others until we can lead ourselves.

5. Create Happiness:

Happy employees make for happy customers. Happy customers make for happy investors. Happy investors make for happy CEO’s.

6. Sharpen Our Saw:

We have to take care of ourselves by making our emotional, spiritual, and physical health a priority. We must sharpen our saw and develop the skills that we need prior to fulfilling our dream position. The world is in need of better leaders who are purposed to be one.

The Common Denominator of Success

As I was finishing up the miniature edition of “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens” by Sean Covey this morning (I just needed some quick inspiration), I came across a very thought provoking quote summing up Albert E.N. Gray’s years of studying successful people. It goes as follows:

“All successful people have the habit of doing the things failures don’t like to do. They [successful people] don’t like doing them necessarily either. But their disliking is subordinated to the strength of their purpose.”

After reading this I felt inclined to google Albert E.N. Gray. The first result that appeared was a PDF link to a 6 page article of his entitled, “The Common Denominator of Success.” After reading this article, it really helped me to gain more of an understanding as to what truly separates those who succeed from those who do not. Here’s a quick hint, not only do successful people do the things that “unsuccessful” people do not like to do, successful people also have a purpose strong enough to make them form the habit of doing things they don’t like in an effort to accomplish the purpose they are looking to achieve. Wow! This is timeless knowledge from 1940!

[Disclaimer]: I personally believe that “success” is relative to the beholder of it’s title. Hence, whenever the term “failure” or “unsuccessful” is mentioned, it is not to demean or patronize anyone who may take offense. Our purpose here at aloversambition.com is to publish purposeful and thought-provoking content with the aim to enlighten and inspire our readers.

Here are 4 main points that I extracted from Albert E.N. Gray’s 6 page article that were most relevant to myself. Hopefully we can all benefit from this in some capacity!

1. Embrace What’s Difficult:

The secret of success lies in forming the habit of doing things that unsuccessful people don’t like to do. The things that unsuccessful people don’t like to do are the very things that you and I and other human beings naturally don’t like to do. In other words, we’ve got to realize right from the start that success is something which is achieved by the minority. Therefore, it is unnatural and not to be achieved by following our natural likes and dislikes nor by being guided by our natural preferences and prejudices.

2. Focus On Accomplishing Results:

By doing the things we don’t like to do, we can accomplish the things we want to accomplish. For example, successful people are influenced by the desire for pleasing results. Unsuccessful people are influenced by the desire for pleasing methods and are satisfied with the results obtained by doing things they like to do. Why are successful people able to do things they don’t like to do while unsuccessful people are not? Because successful people have a purpose strong enough to make them form the habit of doing things they don’t like to do in order to accomplish the purpose they want to accomplish. In other words, it’s important that we find our why. Our why is our purpose. As comedian, Michael Jr. once said, “When we know our why, our what has more impact because we’re walking in or towards our purpose.”

3. Have a Growth Adaptability Mindset:

It is easier to adjust ourselves to the hardships of a poor living than it is to adjust ourselves to the hardships of making a better one. Think of all the things we are willing to go without in order to avoid doing the things we don’t like to do. All of which seems to prove that the strength which holds us to our purpose is not our own strength but the strength of our purpose itself.

4. Form Purposeful Habits:

Every single qualification for success is acquired through habit. People form habits and habits form futures. If we do not deliberately form good habits, then unconsciously we will form bad ones. We are the kind of people we are because we have formed the habit of being that kind of person. The only way we can change is through habit. Behind every success there must be a purpose and this is what makes purpose so important to our future. It is important that we do not allow our future to solely depend on circumstances in which we have no control. Rather, our future should depend on our purpose in life.

How Might We Discover Our Purpose?

Back in December of 2015, I listened to episode 263 of Lewis Howes’, “School of Greatness” podcast. In this particular episode, Lewis sits down with Brad Lomenick, author of “The Catalyst Leader” to discuss how to go about mastering confidence, humility, and leadership. A little less than halfway through the podcast (14:42), Lewis poses the following question to Brad, “How might we go about discovering our own unique purpose?”

Here is some very helpful insight in regards to helping us discover, identify, and pursue our own unique purpose in life:

1. Identity:

Our identity is who we are. It consists of all of the things which we cannot change. For example, we cannot change our ethnic background, our family structure, or when and where we were born.

(Ex: Hello, my name is Aquaus Kelley and I am of African-American descent. I am from Staten Island, NY and I graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in Communication).

2. Calling:

Our calling is what we are meant to do. It is why we are here on this planet. It is our purpose or social mission. In Victor E. Frankl’s book, “A Man’s Search For Meaning” he calls this our “Will to Meaning” (Pg. 99). If we are unaware as to what our purpose may be, we may want to start with discovering our own interests and passions.

(Ex: My calling is to lead people towards becoming the best versions of themselves in an effort to set them up for personal success. Overall, my social mission is to use my influence to project positivity across the globe and invest in the collective future of society through the arts, education, entertainment, and leadership).

3. Assignment:

Our assignment is our current day to day role or vocation. Ideally, this should align with our calling. When our assignment does not align with our calling, it may cause Noögenic neuroses. According to Dr. Frankl, noögenic neuroses is the cause of frustration due to the misalignment of our calling (purpose) and our assignment (vocation).

(Ex: My current assignment is that of a brand strategist, educator, and music publisher. I curate content and develop brand strategy through A Lovers Ambition Lifestyle Group, I work with middle school students in the field of education, and I specialize in identifying talent and creating opportunities for emerging artists as a music publisher).

Think about it. How do we feel when we are in a profession that does not allow our own purpose to flourish? Once we are able to discover, identify, and pursue our calling, we are then better equipped to select and manage which assignments are best for our own ultimate success!

Time Tells The Truth: Tai Lopez

Yes…I finally have a four word answer to one of the questions I receive pretty often, “Aquaus, how are you so patient?” As my virtual mentor Tai Lopez says, “Time tells the truth.” Indeed it does!

I’ve always believed that I will find out everything that I need to know in due time. I also believe that all of the questions that I pose to myself, others, and the universe at large will always be answered when the time is right. If I don’t have an answer, the time isn’t right. However, this definitely doesn’t mean that I just sit around waiting for answers. No, no, no. In order to execute anything, we must first begin. Once we begin, the race kicks off. However, as I like to say, “Life is not a sprint, it’s a marathon.”

Patience allows us to see many things. As time elapses, we receive various indicators as to how to navigate the myriad of realms in our lives. This includes business, dating, friendships, and relationships just to name a few. When we learn how to love and embrace time, we also learn how to listen and we begin to understand how time tells us the truth. Time tells us what we deserve. We must respect it and keep it on our side. Time must not be taken for granted. When we’re patient, humble, and attentive, we position ourselves to receive what is true for us at a time when it can have the greatest impact on our lives.

Take The Humble Road: Empty Your Mind

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine jokingly told me that she hates when my actions are deliberately a reflection of hers. My response, “I’m like water.” She then asked me what I meant by that statement and I sent her a direct link to the source…the legend himself, Mr. Bruce Lee.

Today, as I recorded my 7 Days of Wisdom video for Episode 15, one of the discussion points I mentioned was “Staying Cool Under Pressure.” Once again, I revisited Bruce Lee’s “Empty your mind, be like water clip.” According to my knowledge, this clip originates from “The Way of the Intercepting Fist.”

This time around, in my 7 Days of Wisdom video for Episode 15, the focus of discussion was on staying cool under pressure and taking the humble road. In my experience, I personally believe that when we remain calm and tranquil as humans, we allow the emotions of others to bounce off of us as a reflection of their own actions. That reflection, whether positive or negative, then gets directed back to the owner of those emotions. When we act as a mirror, we allow people to see themselves through us. In many instances, this approach requires a ton of patience, confidence, and taking the humble road.

In author Sean Covey’s national bestseller, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens,” he gives a great example of being proactive vs reactive. Covey uses the analogy of being like soda vs being like water. He mentions, “Reactive people make choices based in impulse. They are like a can of soda. If life shakes them up a bit, the pressure builds and they suddenly explode.” On the contrary, “Proactive people make choices based on values. They think before they act. Unlike reactive people who are full of carbonation, proactive people are like water. No bubbling, no fizzing, no pressure. They are calm, cool, and in control.”

As Bruce Lee says:

“Empty your mind. Be formless. Shapeless, like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. Put it into a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or creep or drip or crash…be water my friend, be water.” – Bruce Lee

Resources We Love: 10 Ways To Amplify Your Blog

A week or so ago I came across Michael Hyatt’s weekly podcast dedicated to intentional leadership entitled, “This Is Your Life with Michael Hyatt.” The first episode that I checked out was his interview with his co-host, Michele Cushatt entitled, “Blow Up Your Blog!” For anyone looking to start a blog or a website, this is a must watch.

Here are 10 Ways To Amplify Your Blog according to Michael Hyatt:

1. Create Content Worth Sharing:

As an owner of a blog, we are 100% in control of our content. The best way to create content worth sharing is to focus on quality material. Hyatt mentions, “Create content that’s so good that people are willing to share it with other people.”

2. Adhere to a Consistent Schedule:

“Consistency is far more important than frequency” says Hyatt. No matter how many times of week we create content, we must be consistent. Hyatt also mentions, “Trust is a necessity. The best way to build trust is to show up on a consistent basis.” Don’t overwhelm yourself. If you overwhelm yourself, you may be overwhelming your audience.

3. Get a Domain Name:

Create your own domain name. Stay away from name.tumblr.com or name.wordpress.com. It’s bad branding and shows that you are an amateur who does not take their work seriously. Once you create your own domain name, you can then link it to your Tumblr or WordPress blog.

4. Promote Your Website:

Do your best to promote your website. Whenever you get the opportunity to promote your work, the first thing that you want to share with people is your website address. If your website is set up correctly with the right contact and social media information, people will find out whatever they need to find out about you on your website.

For example, let’s examine Facebook and Youtube. Every time someone shares a piece of content that originates from either Facebook or Youtube, the names of those websites are being promoted as well. When you create content that is worth sharing, the name of your website begins to spread along with the content.

5. Make it Easy To Subscribe:

Have an option on your website that allows people to subscribe to updates. However, don’t ask for too much information. Why? According to Hyatt, “The more information you ask for, the more it diminishes your conversion rate.” People don’t want to give out all of their personal information. It is only necessary to collect a potential subscribers first name and email address.

6. Optimize Your Posts For SEO:

SEO stands for “Search Engine Optimization.” What search engine optimization does is populate your posts so that search engines can catalog them appropriately and boost your rankings on Google. If you’re on WordPress, check out the “All In One SEO” plug-in.

7. Utilize Social Media:

Use social media as an outpost to direct people back to the content on your website.

8. Engage in Conversation:

Certain content elicits certain conversations. It’s important to engage in conversations. Make sure to answer questions, thank people for comments, etc.

9. Comment on Other Websites:

It’s important to contribute and add meaningful value to other online communities. By doing this, it helps to increase your brand visibility  and awareness when someone takes an interest in something that you shared. When people like what you share, they want to keep up with what you’re doing. Thus, they become another supporter of your content.

10. Write Guest Posts:

Through writing guest posts on other platforms, people find you by linking back to your website.

Causes We Love: Philabundance

One of my good friends posted this video on his company’s Facebook fan page a few weeks ago and as soon as I saw the video, I knew that I had to share it. Here’s a great example of an awesome initiative led by an organization by the name of Philabundance. Philabundance is a non-profit based in Philadelphia, PA that seeks to drive hunger from our communities today and end hunger forever.

Fare and Square, the nation’s first full-service non-profit grocery store based in Chester, PA is a new program powered by Philabundance. It’s aim is to entice customers to eat healthier by offering rewards. By offering rewards that enable low-income families in our communities to obtain healthy food, Fare and Square and Philabundance are helping to provide affordable options for those in our communities that need it the most.

I believe that this is certainly something that is scalable. I would love to see initiatives like this in all underserved communities throughout the country!
