How Might We Value Equity?

This post was originally published on LinkedIn on May 7, 2017.

On Sunday May 7, 2017, as I was reading pg. 29 of Keith Ferrazzi‘s, “Never Eat Alone”, I came across a tool which he uses called, “The Relationship Action Plan.” This plan is separated into 3 parts:

1. Developing goals that will help us fulfill our mission.

2. Connecting these goals to the people, places, and things (resources) that will help us get the job done.

3. Determining the best way to reach out to the people who can help us to accomplish our goals.

As I was reading this, it made me reflect on one of my #7DaysOfWisdom videos which I shot back in September of 2016. In this video, I discussed the relationship between sweat equity, relationship equity, and financial equity. In addition to Keith’s “Relationship Action Plan”, I believe that it is highly important for us to understand and value equity.

Equity is something which we can all learn and earn. It starts with the amount of work we decide to put in (sweat equity). Through our sweat equity, we will eventually begin to build the connections and relationships (relationship equity) which lead to opportunities to increase our financial equity and the impact we can have on the lives of others. Let’s stay focused and have fun pursuing the things we love to do in life. Live legendary, leave a legacy!

The Spiritual Partnership: Gary Zukav

Hey! What can I say? First off, where should I start? Although my mother probably had his books laying all across our house when I was younger, I first remember coming across Gary Zukav when I checked out Oprah on her “Living Brave” interview with Brené Brown (2:44) earlier this year. Oprah mentioned Gary Zukav’s book on intention, which I believe was “The Seat of The Soul” as the spawning of a breakthrough in her life back in 1989. Interestingly enough, back in October of 2015 I stumbled upon one of his quotes on Pinterest. I just couldn’t help but to pin it to one of my boards and share it with my friends on Facebook. I believe that the quote was extracted from “Soul Stories” and it goes as follows:

“The new female and the new male are partners on a journey of spiritual growth. They want to make the journey. Their love and trust keep them together. Their intuition guides them. They consult with each other. They are friends. They laugh a lot. They are equals. That is what a spiritual partnership is: a partnership between equals for the purpose of spiritual growth.” – Gary Zukav

How amazing right!?!?! This is the essence of it all! A true partnership. A spiritual journey. Divine love and connection. Sound a little too “woo woo” for you? You may want to consider opening up and digging deeper. Why settle for anything or anyone? You deserve the right to be selective with the people you choose to engage deeply with. We’re not talking about surface level relationships, I mean deep engagement.

When it comes to intimacy and romantic relationships, I like to use the term “Holistic Compatibility.” I consider holistic compatibility to be a prime partnership match on many if not all or most levels. Of course, not much can be perfect. However, whatever is not operating well can still be worked on. As long as good intentions remain the case, perfection is less in the result as it is in the willingness to persist, learn, and improve.

Love is the answer!

YAW – Hump Day

Last week as I was perusing through twitter on a routine hunt to connect with new faces, I came across a profile that included Artist Mgmt/DJ in the description. The person’s name happened to be Mike Cellucci. What happened next? Of course I had to reach out and inquire about some of the acts in which he manages.

The first act that he sent me is an MC named YAW (pronounce Yáo). I checked out his twitter and then clicked on a link to his bandcamp page. As soon as I heard ‘Cool‘, I wanted to listen to more. When I heard ‘The Office Fling‘, I was sold. It doesn’t take me long to identify talent once I encounter it. YAW has the ability to tell magnificent stories that everyday people can relate to. He verbally paints pictures that stick vividly to ones mind. His latest project is entitled, Hump Day and specifically discusses the interaction between male and female regarding a variety of issues; dating, courting, relationships, infidelity, etc.

Rita Pierson: Every Kid Needs a Champion

Whether or not you may consider yourself to be an educator, we all help to educate others in one way or another.

Women like Rita Pierson are just one of the many reasons why I chose to get involved in education. To this day, I continue to stay involved in education in various capacities.

City Year Miami

In August of 2011, I chose to serve as an AmeriCorps Member for an education focused non-profit organization entitled, City Year Miami. As a Corps Member, I worked at Miami Edison Senior High School. Our goal as Corps Members were to help decrease the drop-out rate and get “at-risk” students in “under-resourced” schools back on track to graduate.

Where Is The Love?

So, why do students drop out in the first place? Poverty, poor attendance, and negative peer influences are just a few examples. For this reason, the need for students to form empowering, purposeful, and productive relationships is paramount.

Human emotion transcends cultural barriers. Thus, the value and importance of human connection and relationships are pivotal.

According to Dr. James P. Comer, the Maurice Falk Professor of Child Psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine’s Child Study Center, “No significant learning can occur without a significant relationship.”

Be A Champion

As Sean Covey puts it, “seek first to understand, then to be understood.” In order to be a good teacher, you must be a great student. Listen and learn. There are voices out here that need to be heard. There are thoughts that need to be cultivated. There are talents that need to be developed.

“Every child deserves a champion.” – Rita Pierson
